Staff Training

YRL is committed to providing the highest quality service to its members and a primary focus is training. In addition to providing in-person training sessions upon request, we take a proactive approach by constantly assessing needs and developing content that is accessible and relevant. If you have any request for training materials or sessions, contact a Learning and Development Services librarian.

Self-paced courses

There are many resources that can assist you with developing your core competencies, skills and knowledge. Here are some that we recommend:

Niche Academy for Staff
You will not only find custom Polaris training courses here, but general and library-specific courses, such as Customer Service 101, How to Serve Genealogists Now, Power Mapping: Building Your Library's Influence, and Twitter: For People Who've Never Tweeted.

Niche Academy for Patrons
Our patron-specific portal to Niche Academy has online tutorials for them to explore many of YRL's popular eResources, including cloudLibrary, OverDrive, Lynda.com and PressReader.

Lynda.com
For staff and patrons alike, your library membership gets you access to thousands of online courses to improve skills in business, leadership, web design, IT, marketing, photography and more.

FOIP: Focus on Privacy Online Training
Developed by Service Alberta, this interactive self-managed course for employees of public bodies will build your basic awareness of Alberta's Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP). It takes less than two hours to complete, but you don't have to do it all in one sitting.
Once you complete it, read the FOIP FAQs for Public Libraries document (PDF).

DigitalLearn
A partnership between Public Library Association (PLA) and the Chicago Public Library, DigitalLearn.org is an online hub for digital literacy support and training. You'll find self-directed tutorials for yourself and your patrons covering everything from basic skills like how to use a mouse to more intermediate courses like using Microsoft Word.
