Thank you to all intrepid eResource Explorers who participated in our eResource Expedition! We hope you had as much fun as we did discovering the eResources, taking on tasks, and sleuthing out the answers. If you are interested in hosting your own eResource Expedition with patrons and the community, email askyrl@yrl.ab.ca to obtain a copy of the tasks to use.

Contest Rules

This contest is open to all staff at YRL member libraries.

Each week, for seven weeks, we will release new tasks on this page. These tasks will have you delving deep into each of our eResources to complete activities and discover answers.

You can fill out your answers in the sheet linked below. Once all the tasks have been released, you can submit your answer sheet to askyrl@ylr.ab.ca to be entered into a prize draw. Fill in as many tasks as you can, each completed task will equal one entry into the draw. Prizes will include two Kobo Clara eReaders, gift cards, books and more!

The final tasks will be released the week of December 18th-22nd, 2023. Answer sheets must be submitted by January 12th, 2024. Prizes will be drawn the week of January 15th-19th, 2024.

Task 1

A to Z Food America helps you find recipes from every state in the US. Which classic dish from Georgia would you most like to try? 

Task 2

Use A to Z World Travel to plan your next trip to Nairobi. Which attractions do you most want to visit? 

Task 3

Learn statistics, facts and history from countries all over the world with Global Road Warrior. Attach a screenshot of your favourite vintage postcard from Australia. 

Task 4

Get great recipes and cooking tips from A to Z Food World! Go to the How Food is Made section and let us know which food hack you'll be using going forward. 

Task 5

Choose a language you want to learn and watch a daily lesson on Pronunciator. Which new word did you learn? 

In the Clouds

Task 1

Open AudioBookCloud and pick a Classic Audiobook that you would be interested in listening to. Which eAudiobook did you choose? 

Task 2

Use TeenBookCLoud to find a YA/Teen Mystery Book to recommend to patrons. Which eBook would you recommend?  

Task 3

Check out the lists available on Cloud Library. These lists are updated monthly across TRAC. Which list would you most like to read a book from? 

Task 4

Romance novels are known for having eye-catching covers. Attach a screenshot of your favourite cover from RomanceBookCloud

Kidding Around

Task 1

Encouraging reading is about having fun! Test out some of the activities available on LOTE4Kids and fill in a colouring page. Attach a screenshot of your finished piece. 

Task 2

World Book Online provides access to multiple learning sites including early learning, Spanish and French encyclopedias and historical timelines. Use Timelines to figure out the name of the ship that was wrecked in 1873. 

Task 3

Choose from a plethora of animated story books, chapter books and graphic novels available from TumbleBooks. Read Monster Hug by David Ezra Stein. What happens at the end of the story? 

Task 4

Solaro lets kids create custom learning profiles. Click the profile picture in the right-hand corner to design an avatar. Attach a screenshot of your avatar. 

 

Business Builders

Task 1

Grant Connect can help you discover new grants and funders for your library. However, it can be daunting to start searching. Luckily Grant Connect has guided tours, to help you understand the site better. Find the guided tour titled “Funder Search” and attach a screenshot. 

Task 2

The Cisco Networking Academy gives you access to online technology courses designed for the modern workforce. Open the Networking Basics Course. What is the title of module 5.2.2? 

Task 3

Cypress Resume has a resume building tool and a cover letter creator. Select Cover Letter, and then Browse by Industry (Library). Which job description most closely matches your own? 

Task 4

Browse the different categories of courses available on LinkedIn Learning. Which learning path would you be most interested in taking? 

Discover Reading

Task 1

CELA can loan accessible titles designed for patrons with print disabilities to your library. Which types of materials can you borrow from CELA? 

Task 2

Use Novelist to search for the last great book you read. Open the list of read-alikes and find a new book to read. Which book did you pick? 

Task 3

Scroll through the titles available in the Prairie Indigenous eBook Collection. When you find one you’re interested in, you can borrow and start reading it immediately! Attach a screenshot of the front page of the book you chose.

NNELS provides a lot of excellent information about the accessibility of eBooks and the apps that support them. Which format of text file is the most accessible?

Task 1

Use the Alberta Research Portal to track down a newspaper published by the Calgary Indian Friendship Center and submit a screenshot.  

Task 2

Consumer Reports helps you to make more informed purchasing decisions. Use the Mattress Selector Tool to find the best mattress for you. Which mattress did you pick?  

Task 3

Discover family connections and learn your history using Ancestry. Not sure where to start? Navigate to the Learning Center and check out the top 10 search tips. What is tip number 2? 

Task 4

In Frontier Life, find the map of Canada produced in 1818. Can you figure out where your town would be located on the map today? Attach a screenshot. 

Are You Not Entertained?

Task 1

PressReader provides instant access to the magazines and newspapers you enjoy. You can also use it to search for relevant articles on topics you’re interested in. Search the word library. What are some of the common themes coming up?  

Task 2

Which movie or TV show available on hoopla do you want to watch next? 

Task 3

The Read Alberta Collection is consistently getting new material added. Choose an eBook or magazine released within the last 6 months to read next. Attach a screenshot of your choice.

In the mood to read something right away? Use the Lucky Day reads feature in Libby to borrow a book instantly. Which book did you borrow?
