Indigenous Collections

Our curated collection of resources integrates indigenous knowledge and
perspectives while supporting a range of learning outcomes throughout
the Alberta Education Programs of Study.

Alberta and Canada (Grades K-6) 

This kit's materials help children appreciate Alberta and Canada's history and cultural heritage by recognizing the presence and influence of FNMI peoples and becoming familiar with oral traditions, narratives and stories.

Art and Music

A diverse range of books and music CDs showcase traditional Aboriginal and Inuit art, artists and traditions that will give students visual, cultural and creative experiences.

Cree Syllabics Kit

1 x bin of assorted 3D printed Cree Syllabics, 16 laminated flash cards, 1 book of Cree words in syllabics. 

Community (Grades K-6) 

The materials in this kit incorporate FNMI content into the focus on community, family and traditions that is part of the Alberta Education Social Studies curriculum.

English Language Arts (Grades K-6)

Storybook, folktales and novels integrate FNMI content into elementary English Language Arts curriculum through comprehending texts and exploring ideas, feelings and experiences.

English Language Arts (Grades 7-12)

Age-appropriate materials, including oral stories, novels and poetry, give students an opportunity to recognize and appreciate how literature conveys the Aboriginal experience.

General Interest for Adults

A variety of non-fiction and fiction titles supplemented with audio-visual materials create a browsing collection that is suitable for use in public libraries.

General Interest for All Ages

This collection contains a diverse range of books and music for children, teens and adults. It is ideal for supplementing a public library collection or temporary display.

Health and Physical Education

A range of fiction and non-fiction books for children and teenagers infuses FNMI content into the topics of nutrition, personal health and physical activity.

Language

There are a number of Cree language learning materials in this kit, including bilingual storybooks, workbooks and phrase books.

Social Studies (Grades 7-12)

Resources have been compiled to explore and assess the origins, histories, and social and political changes of Aboriginal societies in pre-and post-Confederation Canada.
